Ice-Cream!

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

Ice-cream is definitely one of the things that Musselburgh is most famous for! There are two major ice-cream parlous in the town - S. Lucas and Di Rollos. Personally I think Lucas makes the best ice-cream (maybe in the world...) but many people favour Di Rollos..... PLEASE VOTE FOR THE BEST ICE-CREAM IN THE POLL TO THE RIGHT---->

S. Lucas (The Olympia Cafe)
32-34 High Street, EH21 7AG
Tel: 0131 665 2237

Opening hours:
Monday - Saturday: 09.00 - 22.00
Sunday: 10.30 - 22.00

Click here for the company website.

S. Lucas is a family-run company that was started back in 1908. The man who started it all was called Luca Scappaticcio but this was changed around to S.Luca for an easier name. The company is still ran by Luca family members. At 84, Tino is the oldest Luca and he still has an active role. Lucas has a second shop in Morningside.

The counter offers soft scoop ice-cream in Luca's three main flavours - Vanilla (amazing), Chocolate and Strawberry. There is usually also a couple of speciality flavours such as mint chocolate chip and toffee fudgy wudgy. You can also buy big tubs of frozen ice-cream so you can store them up at home. Oriana Luca makes speciality ice-cream cakes to order for occasions such as birthdays and weddings. The counter also sells random and retro sweets you'd long forgotten about!

The cafe offers a big selection of snacks, light meals and an all-day breakfast to beat your hangover! There are sandwiches, paninis, toasties, homemade lasagne, homemade burgers, homemade soup, pizzas - and of course a selection of ice-cream sundaes!

Luca's is definitely worth a trip if you're in the area!

Di Rollos of Musselburgh is also a family-run business and was established in 1899 by Domenico Di Rollo. This company does not have a cafe but sell ice-cream, Belgium chocolates, seasonal novelties, hampers, confectionery and now even jewellery in their shop!

The benefit of Di Rollos over S.Lucas is their extensive range of ice-cream - the sell over 30 flavours. You are also able to buy products such as chocolates and shortbread over their website. _*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

Public Transport to Musselburgh

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*
Buses

The bus services into Musselburgh from Edinburgh's city centre are very frequent. There are four LRT buses and seven First buses that travel through the town.

The bus fare for both companies is £1.10 for a single journey and £2.50 for a day ticket. You can also purchase a 4-weekly bus pass for unlimited travel. This costs £36.00 from First and £37.00 from LRT - however, with valid student ID, you can get a 4-weekly LRT pass for only £31.00.

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

LRT Bus # 30
This is the bus most QMU student's will be used to! It travels all the way from Cloverstone Drive in Wester Hails to Musselburgh Grammar School via Balgreen, the West End of Princess Street, North Bridge, Fort Kinnaird, QMU and Musselburgh High Street. According to the timetable, the journey from Princes Street to QMU only takes about 40 minutes but if you've made the trip, you'll know it feels a lot longer than that!!

Click
here for the full timetable.

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

LRT Bus # 26
This is the bus that QMU students who went to the old campus will be familiar with! The 26 travels from Clerwood to Tranent or Seaton Sands. Be careful which bus you get as some only go as far as Eastfield or Levenhall. The route passes through Haymarket, St Andrews Square, Portobello, Musselburgh and Prestonpans before going to either Tranent or Seaton Sands. The timetable states the journey from Edinburgh city centre to Musselburgh takes about 30 minutes. It can sometime be a lot quicker to get the 26 from Edinburgh to Musselburgh then jump on a 30 up to QMU.

Click
here for the full timetable.
_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

LRT Bus # 44
The 44's journey covers Balerno, Slateford, Haymarket, St Andrews Square, Brunstane, Musselburgh and ends up in Wallyford. The timetable advises the route from Edinburgh city centre to Musselburgh will take about 35 minutes. Getting this bus to Musselburgh then switching to a 30 is another alternative to getting the #30 bus directly from town to uni.

Click
here for the full timetable.

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

LRT Bus # 15
Last and least frequent is the 15/15A bus. This service travels all the way from Penicuik to Tranent, passing by The Rosslyn Chapel (that was featured in Dan Brown's 2003 novel, The Da Vinci Code!!), Midlothian Ski Centre (for some outdoor skiing on fake snow!), Fairmilehead, Morningside, Tollcross, St Andrews Square, Portobello, Musselburgh and arriving in Tranent (an hour and 40 mins later). The journey from town to Musselburgh is timetabled to take about 35 minutes.

Click
here for the full timetable.

Night Buses
Lothian Buses offer a night service for #26 and #44. With fares of only £2.50 (or £1.50 with a valid Ridacard) it's a good cheap alternative to a taxi home from Edinburgh's city centre.

Unfortunately the N30 is no longer running.
_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

Trains
A lot of QMU students get the train into university as it is obviously a lot faster than the bus. Scotrail run trains from Edinburgh Waverly to Musselburgh hourly. Single fares cost £1.90 and a day return costs £3.00. Click here for Scotrail's website to find out timetables and keep an eye out for any service disruptions.
